BE AWARE OF SUSPICIOUS EMAILS

Phishing attacks continue to be on the rise, following a surge during the pandemic.  Criminals are now using the cost of living crisis to target further victims, and using more sophisticated methods via telephone and text message, as well as email scams.

What is phishing?

‘Phishing’ is when criminals use scam emails, text messages or phone calls to trick their victims. The aim is often to make you visit a website, which may download a virus onto your computer, or steal bank details, or encourage you to pass on personal information, such as bank details.

How to spot scam messages or calls

  • Often come with a sense of urgency
  • May appear to come from a trusted source e.g. HMRC or financial institution
  • Emails generally contain spelling and grammatical errors
  • They may ask for personal information such as bank details
  • Offer refunds, rebates or time limited special offers
  • Can be unexpected or threatening

If you have any doubts about a message contact the organisation directly using their official contact details (not those obtained in the message) and remember your bank, or any other official organisation will NEVER ask for your personal details.
